Thomas FITT, Shoemaker of Hursley

Thomas FITT was born about 1681 and married  Margaret  ? , a widow.,
In 1715 Thomas  received the 'Star' at Hursley from Joan KENT, and  is mentioned in her will of 1729.  Joan was his mother remarried.
Thomas is described as a shoemaker (1715), overseer of the poor (1724), churchwarden (1731/2) and yeoman of Hursley (1733) .

Thomas and Margaret had the following children,

  • James was baptised on the 2nd November 1719  and married Mary NEWLAND on the 18th February 1740.
    James died on the 11th November 1784 and was buried on the 14th.  Mary was born on the 11th January 1708 had died on the 27th October 1759 being buried on the 30th October.
    All at Hursley

  • Thomas was baptised on the 30th October 1722 at Hursley and married Sarah SNUGGS on the 28th July 1754 at South Stoneham.
    Sarah was baptised on the 8th February 1723 at Otterbourne and buried on 10th June 1779 at Hursley.
    Thomas remarried to Elizabeth SMITH on the 5th April 1783 at Hursley

Thomas, the shoemaker,  died on the 20th January 1736 and was buried on the 21st  at Hursley.  
His tombstone lies by the west wall of Hursley churchyard (1980)
Thomas achieved some prosperity leaving his estate to James and £100 to his youngest son, Thomas and £20, goods and chattels to his wife, Margaret.

Thomas's wife, Margaret, was buried on the 30th January 1760 at Hursley.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

There are many FITT tombstones in a stack in the SW corner of Hursley graveyard.
